進入Enter本寺自一九七二年春創立，至今已逾半世紀，歷經三次遷移，於一九八〇年定居現址。五十年來，未曾一日中斷講經、坐禪、念佛。 Founded in spring 1972, relocated three times, settled at the current address in 1980. For over half a century, the temple has never ceased its teaching, meditation, and recitation practice.
本寺創立於一九七二年，由智海長老在舊金山創建。最初道場面積狹小，歷經三次搬遷，終於一九八〇年落址於現今的三十八街。多年來，本寺不僅是舊金山華人社區的佛教中心，更吸引來自各地的求法者。Founded in 1972 by Master Chi Hoi, the temple began in a small space and moved three times before settling at 1339 38th Avenue in 1980. Over the decades it has become a spiritual home not only for San Francisco's Chinese community but for truth-seekers from all backgrounds.
所講經論包括：妙法蓮華經、普賢行願品、解深密經、阿彌陀經、金剛經、心經、圓覺經、楞嚴經、天台宗綱要、大乘止觀、大乘起信論、唯識三十頌、八識規矩頌、俱舍論、成佛之道等十餘種。Sutras and treatises taught include the Lotus Sutra, Samantabhadra's Conduct, Samdhinirmocana, Amitabha Sutra, Diamond Sutra, Heart Sutra, Complete Enlightenment, Shurangama Sutra, Tiantai Essentials, Mahayana Shamatha, Awakening of Faith, Thirty Verses, Eight Consciousnesses, Abhidharma-kosha, and the Path to Buddhahood.
現正講授天台小止觀和六妙門，另有通俗佛學講座、佛經教義提綱、念佛開示、禪觀知識與實習等。Currently teaching Tiantai Small Shamatha and the Six Wonderful Gates, along with popular Dharma lectures, scriptural outlines, Pure Land teachings, and Chan meditation instruction.

天台宗第四十五世法脈傳人 · 禪淨雙修45th Tiantai Lineage Holder · Chan-Pure Land Dual Cultivation
智海長老，北京昌平縣人，一九二六年出生於農業家庭。十七歲時於紅螺山資福寺——淨土宗第十二代祖師徹悟大師道場——依越塵上人出家，專修念佛法門三年。一九四四年於北京廣濟寺受具足戒，入廣化佛學院攻讀佛學及文史邏輯諸學，親近慈舟、真空、倓虛等高僧。Born in 1926 in Changping County, Beijing. At seventeen, he was ordained at Hongluo Shan Zifu Temple — the monastery of the 12th Pure Land patriarch Master Che Wu — under Master Yue Chen, practicing Buddha recitation for three years. He received full ordination in 1944 at Beijing's Guangji Temple and studied at Guanghua Buddhist Academy under eminent masters including Ci Zhou, Zhen Kong, and Tan Xu.
一九四八年至蘇州靈巖山寺印光大師道場潛修。倓虛大師傳授天台宗第四十五世法脈。長老以教演天台、唯識為志願，修行念佛調息為宗旨，提倡禪淨雙修、求生淨土為圓滿。In 1948 he went to Lingyan Mountain Temple to practice under Master Yin Guang. Master Tan Xu transmitted the 45th generation Tiantai lineage to him. His teaching approach integrates Tiantai and Consciousness-Only philosophy with Buddha recitation and breath-regulation practice, promoting dual cultivation of Chan and Pure Land.
一九六七年旅居美國弘法，一九七二年創立佛山寺般若講堂。曾任香港內明書院及中華佛學研究會董事，旅美後任美國佛教會及美洲佛教會董事。著述三十餘種，錄音錄影四十餘種。長老於二零二五年四月三日安祥示寂，世壽百齡。He came to the US in 1967 to teach Buddhism and founded BWLH in 1972. He has served on the boards of several Buddhist organizations and has over 30 publications and 40 audio/video recordings. Master Chi Hoi passed away peacefully on April 3, 2025, at the age of 100, surrounded by the chanting of his assembly.

天台宗的核心理念。一切現象同時具足三種真理：空諦（無自性）、假諦（暫有）、中道諦（空假不二）。三者非先後、非並列，而是圓融互具，即空即假即中。
The core Tiantai teaching. All phenomena simultaneously possess three truths: Emptiness (no independent nature), Provisional Existence (temporary manifestation), and the Middle Way (the identity of emptiness and provisionality). These are not sequential but perfectly interfused — each contains the other two.
「空假中三諦，雖三而一，雖一而三，不相妨礙，是名圓融三諦。」—— 智者大師"The three truths of emptiness, provisionality, and the middle are three yet one, one yet three, without obstruction. This is called the perfect fusion of the three truths." — Master Zhiyi

每一剎那的心念，即具足三千世間的全部實相。十法界（地獄至佛）互具，乘以十如是、三種世間，總為三千。日常一念，即含攝宇宙全體。
Every single moment of consciousness contains the entirety of the cosmos. The ten realms (from hell-beings to Buddhas) mutually contain each other. Multiplied by the ten suchnesses and three world-systems, the total reaches three thousand. Every thought encompasses the whole of reality.
「一念心具三千世間，即空即假即中。」—— 智顗大師《摩訶止觀》"One single thought contains three thousand realms, which are simultaneously empty, provisional, and the middle." — Master Zhiyi, Mohe Zhiguan

萬法唯識所變。八識包括前五識（感官）、第六意識（思維）、第七末那識（自我執著）、第八阿賴耶識（種子倉庫）。念佛即是將清淨種子熏入阿賴耶識，轉染成淨。
All phenomena are transformations of consciousness. The eight consciousnesses include the five senses, the sixth mind-consciousness, the seventh manas (self-attachment), and the eighth alaya (storehouse consciousness). Buddha recitation plants pure seeds into the alaya, gradually transforming defiled seeds into pure ones.
「由攝心專注佛號，即是以淨種易染種，轉識成智之妙法。」—— 智海長老"By focusing the mind on the Buddha's name, we exchange defiled seeds for pure ones — the wondrous method of turning consciousness into wisdom." — Master Chi Hoi

大眾清晨起床，先上早殿課誦，早餐後經行念佛，繼而靜坐數息。The community rises at dawn for morning chanting, followed by walking meditation after breakfast, then sitting meditation with breath counting.
深入經藏，研習天台教觀、唯識法相，或閱讀經論註疏。Deep study of Tiantai philosophy, Consciousness-Only doctrines, and scriptural commentaries.
每星期日舉行講經法會，由智海長老主講。每月首星期日傳授八關齋戒。Sunday sutra lectures by Master Chi Hoi. First Sunday of each month: Eight Precepts ceremony.
晚殿課誦後，精進念佛或禪修。紅螺山念佛法門：一氣三句念阿彌，一句要比一句低，念清聽清記清楚。Evening chanting service followed by intensive Buddha recitation or Chan practice using the Hongluo Shan method: three chants per breath, each lower in pitch, listening clearly and holding firmly.

數息、隨息、止、觀、還、淨——天台六妙門，是修習止觀的入門方便。調身、調息、調心，三者相應，漸入禪定。
Counting, following, stopping, contemplating, returning, and purifying — the Six Wonderful Gates of Tiantai are the doorway to shamatha-vipashyana. Harmonize body, breath, and mind to enter samadhi.

以《法華經》為根本，立一念三千、圓融三諦之理論，智顗大師創五時八教之判教。本寺以天台教觀為教學核心，講授小止觀、六妙門、大乘止觀。
Based on the Lotus Sutra, Tiantai teaches "one thought containing three thousand realms" and the perfect fusion of the three truths. Master Zhiyi's five periods and eight teachings form the framework. This temple teaches Tiantai's calming-and-insight meditation as its core curriculum.
依《解深密經》《成唯識論》，闡述萬法唯識之理，講授八識規矩頌、唯識三十頌、俱舍論。融合理事，直指心源。
Based on the Samdhinirmocana Sutra and Cheng Weishi Lun, teaching that all phenomena are consciousness-only. Instruction includes the Verses on the Eight Consciousnesses, Thirty Verses on Consciousness-Only, and Abhidharma-kosha.
傳承紅螺山念佛法門——「一氣三句念阿彌，一句要比一句低，念清聽清記清楚，滅罪無量實不虛」。以持名念佛、靜坐數息，求生西方極樂世界。
Carrying on the Hongluo Shan recitation method: "Three chants of Amitabha in every breath, each note lower than the last in pitch, clearly chant, clearly listen, clearly hold, then countless sins will truly be wiped away." Combining name-recitation with sitting meditation, aiming for rebirth in the Western Pure Land.
禪為體，淨為用。天台止觀調心，持名念佛攝心。早晚課誦、經行坐禪、精進佛七、坐禪會，解行並重，定慧等持。
Chan as essence, Pure Land as function. Tiantai calming-and-insight to tune the mind, name-recitation to gather the mind. Morning/evening services, walking meditation, intensive retreats, meditation sessions — study and practice in balance, samadhi and wisdom equally upheld.

天台宗第四十四代祖師44th Tiantai Patriarch
倓虛大師（1875–1963），創立華南學佛院，培養大批佛教人才。一九四八年傳天台法脈於智海長老，對近代佛教貢獻深遠。
Master Tan Xu (1875–1963), founder of the South China Buddhist Academy. In 1948 he transmitted the Tiantai lineage to Master Chi Hoi. His influence on modern Chinese Buddhism is immeasurable.
淨土宗第十三代祖師13th Pure Land Patriarch
印光大師（1861–1940），蘇州靈巖山寺住持。智海長老曾於靈巖山潛修，深受大師淨土思想影響。
Master Yin Guang (1861–1940), abbot of Lingyan Mountain Temple. Master Chi Hoi practiced there and was deeply influenced by his Pure Land teachings.

Master Chi Hoi has authored over 30 works, including major treatises and a series of 20+ Dharma booklets covering Tiantai philosophy, Consciousness-Only, Pure Land practice, and Chan meditation. The temple publishes the annual "Buddha's Voice" newsletter.
